I have mentioned before that I help out at a weekly club for older people. This week there was a discussion about 'thank you' letters which developed into a mini-survey about letter writing in general and we all said we would 'ask around' and see what information we could gather. This is only a fun enquiry but I wonder if Laterlife members would comment on their letter writing/receiving habits. A simple yes or no would be appreciated but if you would like to say what sort of letters you write (family, comments to the paper etc) and how you write (pen, typewriter, email and so on) it would add to the interest. I will start by saying I write several letters each week mainly to family and friends. I email those who have a computer but I still write in the conventional format; I use the computer to write most other letters and then print and post a hard copy. I use a fountain pen to write to two other relatives who say they like to recognise my writing on the envelope. I still phone some people but in general I prefer a letter as it can be passed around without anyone having to remember what was said and the recipient is able to check back at a later date to confirm information. Also, in 100 years, my decendants can't produce a phone call to show what life was like.

I do agree Baz, everyone I know loves to receive a hand written letter. My sons don't think anything of just texting me --------not quite the same.

Baz: Your descendents might not be able to produce your phone call but GCHQ might!!!!!!!! At least no one is intercepting letters at the moment!
